Batman Logo (Tutorial #1)

This emblem is a particularly good example of thinking about designs in terms of "negative space." The "bat" symbol is far too complex to actually piece together, so we build it by taking a black oval shape and etching it away using yellow oval shapes.

Here I've recolored all of the oval and drop shapes used to etch away the black oval. In fact, all colored shapes you see here are yellow in the final result. The exception is the red triangle, which is used to blunt the triangle directly behind it, and is actually black.

Negative space is used to create many of the complex emblems you will see here. For example, this technique is used heavily in the Strong Bad emblem.
